Event Spotlight – Competitive Board Games
Greetings, U-Con Community!
We’re still looking for lots more GMs and events for GMs to run! Remember that GMs get a hefty discount if they run 8 hours of games, and their badge is free if they run 16 hours! Want to get your events ready for players to sign up for before registration goes live? Make sure they are in before the end of August to give our Events Team enough time to schedule them. The Events team wants to remind you that the later you submit your event, the less likely we’ll be able to make your scheduled time request, as we have limited tables and we don’t want to schedule the same game at the same time.
Puffing Billy — From 18xx to Ticket To Ride, Puffing Billy returns to U-Con! Featuring all games of the train variety, the Puffing Billy team will be running events all weekend.
Ark Nova – Plays as conservationists running a zoo! You’ll be setting up animal enclosures, getting animals for those enclosures, work with other zoos across the world, and find sponsors to help fund your efforts. Using the action selection mechanism from Civilization: A New Dawn, actions get stronger as you do other actions. Also, you have to balance how popular your zoo is with your conversation efforts, as the players win condition is how far they can get when the two paths cross.
Dune Imperium – Based off the Dune franchise, Dune Imperium mixes deck building and worker placement in trying to control the planet of Arrakis. Players will be playing cards to be able to use locations on the map to gather soldiers, gain more cards, or curry favor with different factions. Leftover cards are used for their resources. Can you get enough victory points to win? Events are also including the Rise of Ix expansion, which adds another faction to work with.
Foundations of Rome – Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you’ll be done in about 90 minutes putting down different buildings in the city. Players will purchase land and then build different buildings in a grid. Three times during the game, buildings will score for population and civics, which involves which neighbor building adjacency. Easy to learn, easy to play, but plenty of strategy to outwit and out build your opponents.
U-Con still has classic competitive games and events such as the abstract tournament, Munchkin, Scythe, Battlestar Galactica, Dominion, Wingspan, and many more.
