The game I want to play is already sold out!

You know how hard it is to pick a game to play with your local gaming group? Imagine doing that hundreds and hundreds of times, except that you don’t know who likes to play which games or if they already have other plans for the time you want to play. This is basically how putting together the U-Con events schedule goes. Over the course of a few weeks, our team pores over calendars, table requirements, and GM availability to put together three really exciting days of gaming.

Unfortunately, this invariably leads to some events selling out before others. We try to ameliorate this by opening up online pre-registration before the physical convention opens so everyone gets a fair shot at the games they want the most without having to shove their way through a physical line the morning of the event. Even with the best preparation, you can still find yourself looking at a blank spot in your agenda that you were hoping was going to be filled by a game that was sold out.

If you find yourself in this situation and aren’t sure what to do, we have a couple of suggestions:

  1. Check the latest additions tab on the registration site. When we see games sell out, if we have a willing GM and a spare copy of a game, we can often squeeze the game into another slot, sometimes even at the same time.
  2. Check the registration site a couple of times before the actual start time for the game. With people being able to add and remove their own events now, their tickets may come available as their schedules change. We don’t currently have a way to set up waiting lists for sold out events, but that may be something we can implement in the future.

    3.    Organize your own game! Reach out to the community and see if anyone else is interested. Another attendee may have a copy of the game and be willing to play with you, but you won’t know unless you ask. The easiest way to do that would probably be to reach out through facebook.

    4.    As a last ditch effort, if you haven’t found a replacement event, you can always bring generic tickets to the game the day of and hope one of the other players doesn’t show up. With the November weather being as unpredictable as it is in Michigan, we occasionally have folks who end up not being able to make it. Their loss could be your gain!

There are also short notice events if you find yourself with spare time after trying all the above options. Games on Demand and the Games Library can both be great resources during these kind of open spots.

Looking forward to seeing you at least getting most of the games you want to play in November!
