Aftermath: June Games Day
Hello and welcome to the Games Day Aftermath post. We had another good turnout (I’m going to estimate there were 20 to 25 of us) with 4 tables of games going. We even got some new faces; welcome! Also, thanks to everyone who came out and everyone who brought games. I do not track games as such but I do know that quite a lot of games y’all bring wind up getting played at these gatherings. To the people who bring your own games; you wr0ck! No really, you do.
I’ve been unwrapping and de-punching the newest batch of games that arrived for the Library and I thought to myself, “Self” (yes, I do talk to me when I’m the only one in the room), “We ought to give one or two of these a go and see what they are about.” So I snagged Strada Romana and cajoled a couple people into playing it with me.
It’s basically a “move your resources” game and the object is to collect goods for demands. Goods are represented by cubes, Demand is represented by flat squares. If you get a Good that supplies a Demand, you have a Contract which gets you points. There is a whole other aspect of moving the carts from one side of the board to the other and “betting on the ponies” (you can place bets on which cart will arrive at the other side; the game ends when the 4th cart reaches the other side of the board) but once we got into it, it was really quite fun.
While moving oxen into or out of Rome, I leaned over and snapped the other table’s game. Alas, I did not catch what they were playing so if you recognize the game, feel free to insert the name here ________.
I’m not a big fan of the bench seating but what better place to play Red Dragon Inn. It’s by the fireplace (which was not going but still added ambiance).
After the game which I have no name for (or __________ if you are in the know), they pulled out Elder Sign. When I checked in on them, they were one or two turns from Very Bad Things. I did not ask what the final conclusion was.
7 Wonders; all expansions. Every time I play I learn a little bit more about what not to do. One of these days I’ll come in third or possibly second – today was not that day.
Wizard! The hard thing about playing Wizard is that not only do you have to bid tricks, but you have to come in on that bid exactly. No more, no less. So if your Euchre strategy is to bid low and hope to take more, that will not serve you very well in this game. You also aren’t assured of taking that first trick with an ace because Wizards allow you to play off suit even if you have said suit in your hand. Wizards are tricksey.
I’ve seen Wasabi around here and there and when Kenneth D. pulled it out of his bag o’ games I had a delightful squee moment. I like sushi and the game has sounded interesting from the get-go. So Kevin H. and I grabbed a chair and started sharpening our knives. You can see the hidden “recipes” in our menu placard and on the “Kitchen” (board) are a bunch of ingredients. You are trying to get your recipe ingredients in a row on the “Kitchen” (up-down-back-forth) to complete the recipe card. If you get them exactly in order, you do it with style and get bonus extra points. Otherwise, you’re making Kroger sushi: edible, fast but not particularly memorable.
Tune in Next Games Day Post for an AWESOME SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT (which you can totally get the jump on if you check out the Events Calendar at the Corner) and our Official July Games Library Day. We are, for reasons which were probably sound but I have forgotten, meeting on the Third Sunday of July so mark you calendars for July 21st – 2 to 6pm.
